Usage Guidelines
All University policies and ߣÏÈÉú Code of Student Accountability are in effect within Campus Recreation facilities, programs and events.
General Campus Recreation Guidelines
Access
- To gain access to Campus Recreation facilities, all participants must be current Towson University students, have an active membership, be guests of members or be pre-approved groups.
- Access the Campus Recreation Center via the turnstiles. All participants must use a valid ߣÏÈÉú OneCard or the Campus Rec barcode app on a mobile device.
- The sharing of ߣÏÈÉú OneCards or Campus Rec app barcodes is not permitted. If a barcode or OneCard is shared, the individual(s) will be asked to leave the facility.
- All participants must be 18 years of age, with the exception of Towson University students.
Attire
- Shoes intended for physical activity must always be worn, except on lifting platforms and turf. Socks are required with the exception to the mind-body studio and the pool, but footwear is encouraged when walking around in those locations.
- High heels, platform shoes and cleats are not permitted. Cycling cleats are permitted within the cycling studio.
- Tops/sports bra and bottoms are required. Bottoms with rivets or belts that may scratch equipment upholstery are not permitted.
Prohibited Items
- Food and beverages, including gum, must be consumed or disposed of in the lobby prior to entering the turnstiles/gate. Water and sports/energy drinks must be in a non-glass, sealable container to prevent spills (i.e., no coffee to-go cups or canned drinks).
- Use of tape or other adhesive materials on the floors, courts, or walls is not permitted.
Behavior Expectations
- Wipe down equipment before and after use. Sanitation wipes are located throughout the facility.
- Personal and day-use locks are to be removed prior to facility closing time. Any remaining locks will be removed and items in locker will be placed in the lost and found located at the equipment check-out.
- Personal items including bags and jackets are to be stored in day-use lockers.
- All portable electronic devices must be used with headphones. The use of stereos, speakers or any device projecting personal music is prohibited during non-CR programs and events.
- Posting signage, fliers or other announcements is not permitted.
- Campus Recreation facilities may not be used for private or commercial purposes without permission from Campus Recreation management. Examples of prohibited activities include but are not limited to group practices or workouts of 5 or more people, personal training, private instruction, sales and solicitation.
- Any use of or modification of equipment other than its intended purpose is not permitted.
- Participants engaging in unsafe behavior will be requested to stop the activity. Employees reserve the right to deem what is unsafe.
- Report any emergencies, maintenance issues, vandalism, or misuse of facilities to a Campus Recreation employee or by calling 410-704-2367.
Guest and Visitor Access
- Guest passes can be purchased at membership and guest services, on the or via the ߣÏÈÉú Campus Rec mobile app.
- Guest passes are non-refundable.
- Participants/members with a valid membership may sponsor guest(s) for use of Campus Recreation facilities.
- Guests must be always accompanied by their sponsoring member.
- Guests are limited to three (3) per visit.
- A waiver must be completed or currently on file for any guest(s) at time of access.
- All guests are prohibited from participating in sport clubs, intramural sports, clinics, outdoor equipment rental and personal training.
- All guests must have a valid photo ID with full name and birthdate. A picture of a
valid photo ID will be accepted. Acceptable forms of valid photo ID include:
- Driver’s License
- Passport
- State Issued ID Card
- Student ID (must contain birthdate)
Photo/Video Use
Personal Use
Personal photography and videotaping are defined as media of self, friends, and/or family obtained for personal use and is permitted in Towson University Campus Recreation Facilities excluding the:
- Pool
- Restrooms
- Locker rooms
Taking photos or videos of individuals without their consent or any actions deemed inappropriate by Campus Recreation staff is prohibited. Tripods and other peripheral equipment are prohibited.
Academic Use
- Students wishing to take photos or videos in the Campus Recreation facilities for academic use must have received authorization in advance. For authorization, complete this a minimum of three business days in advance of the requested film date.
- Students are not permitted to take photos during group fitness classes for personal or academic use.
University Departments
- University photography and videotaping are permitted in Campus Recreation facilities only with prior authorization. Contact Campus Recreation at campusrec@towson.edu for authorization.
Sport Clubs
- Campus Recreation recognized Sports Club and visiting teams are exempt from these guidelines as it relates to media obtained of competition and competitors
Media and Commercial Access
- All commercial filming should be coordinated and approved through the Division of University Marketing and Communication.
Location Specific Guidelines
In addition to the above guidelines, some spaces have specific guidelines and behavior expectations.
Fitness Floors and Mezzanine
- Participants are expected to rack weights and return all equipment after use.
- Spotters are recommended. Fitness floor attendants are available to provide a spot or assistance with equipment.
- Slamming or dropping weights is not permitted. Participants should slowly lower weights to the ground.
- Rosin bags and chalk blocks are permitted on the lifting platforms only.
Functional/Turf Floor and Sprint Hill/Fitness Stairs
- Participants are expected to rack weights and return all equipment after use.
- Slamming or dropping weights is not permitted. Participants should slowly lower them to the ground.
- Weight sleds are to be used on the turf area only and should be cleared of weight and returned to their proper location after use.
- Use the designated slam wall for throwing medicine balls. Keep area clear of other equipment, as medicine ball slams have priority use.
- Limit use of mats and boxes to the exterior sides of the turf to keep area clear for warm-up, sprints, sleds, tire flipping, etc.
- For safety reasons, equipment is not permitted on the fitness stairs or sprint hill.
- Participants are strongly advised to remove items from pockets (especially cell phones), prior to running on the sprint hill.
Fitness Studios (large, mind-body, cycling, instructional studios)
- Personal items should be stored in appropriate lockers prior to entering the studios. Personal items are not permitted in the studio unless they’re stored in the storage cubbies along the side of the studio. The mind-body studio does not have storage cubbies.
- Equipment must remain in the studio and be returned to its location after use.
Skills Studio
- All participants should wear wraps and/or gloves when using the bags.
- Person-to-person physical contact, hitting, and/or combat are not permitted.
- Participants are to cease all activity if lacerations or bleeding occur. Notify a Campus Recreation employee for proper assistance in sanitation.
- Hanging from the bags and speed bag board is prohibited and will cause damage to the apparatus.
Gymnasiums
- Open recreation basketball has priority use of the gymnasiums unless reserved for specific programming and/or university events.
- Use the posted schedule at the entrance of the courts to view upcoming events and reservations.
- Gymnasium 3 is not available for open recreation.
- During open recreation, the courts are to be used on a first come, first served basis. If others are waiting to play, please limit pick-up games to 30 minutes.
- Only Campus Recreation staff are authorized to disassemble or take down court equipment.
- Kicking, throwing or striking equipment towards the wall, ceiling, basketball assembly or mezzanine is prohibited.
- Non-marking, soft-soled, closed-toe and heel athletic shoes are required. Black/dark soled shoes are not permitted.
- Hanging on the net, rim or any part of basketball standards is prohibited.
Multi-Activity Courts (M.A.C.)
- During open recreation, the courts are to be used on a first come, first served basis. If others are waiting to play, please limit pick-up games to 30 minutes.
- Only Campus Recreation staff are authorized to disassemble or take down court equipment, including volleyball, pickleball and badminton nets.
- Kicking, throwing or striking equipment towards the wall or ceiling is prohibited.
- Intramurals, Sport Clubs and any other reservation arrangements of the MACs take priority.
Pool
- Showers are recommended before entering the pool.
- Appropriate swimming apparel is required. Participants may wear non-cotton shirt/shorts over top of swimsuit.
- Only U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation devices are permitted in the pool.
- Any person having a skin disease, eye infection, nasal or ear discharges, open wounds, cast or any communicable disease are not permitted to use the pool.
- All band aids and/or athletic tape must be removed before entering the pool.
Prohibited behavior:
- Swimming without lifeguards on duty.
- Use of diving boards. All diving must take place in deep end.
- Back flips/dives or twists from the edge of the pool.
- Hanging, sitting, or climbing on lane lines.
- Spitting, spouting water, blowing the nose, or otherwise introducing contaminants into the water.
- Long breath holding (i.e., greater than twenty seconds).
Outdoor Adventure Center/Climbing Wall
- Jewelry and hair should be removed/tied back. If it is unable to be removed/tied back, the individual may participate at their own risk.
- All pockets must be empty when climbing.
- Personal harnesses and belay equipment must be approved by the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation.
- Climbing above the first quick draw without using a rope is not permitted.
- Climbers must tie directly into the harness using a figure eight follow-through and a finish knot. All knots are to be dressed and set.
- All top rope belayers must possess a Campus Recreation-issued top rope belay endorsement to top rope belay.
- All lead climbers must possess a Campus Recreation-issued lead endorsement to lead climb or lead belay.
- All belayers must remain standing and keep their brake hand on the rope when belaying.
- Lead climbers should move as vertically as possible and clip into the quickdraws associated with the attempted route. Lead traverses are not permitted.
- Top rope climbing is not permitted on the ropes directly beside a lead climber.
Burdick Turf Fields
- Field usage is limited to open recreation hours.
- Campus Recreation and/or University programs and events have priority usage.
- Climbing the fence is prohibited. Gated entrances are the only entrance/exit point to the field.
- Sports goals/nets are for authorized users only. Moving the goals/nets are prohibited.
- Kicking or hitting balls into the fence or wall is prohibited. No hitting golf balls on the field.
Prohibited items:
- Flavored drinks, sports drinks, soda and coffee are not permitted.
- Food – including gum, sunflower seeds, fruit, team snacks, etc.
- Metal spikes and high-heeled shoes
- Pets and emotional support animals
- Non-sporting equipment
- Stakes, spikes or other pointed objects
- Grills, space heaters or other equipment with open flames
- Skateboards, roller blades, bicycles, scooters
- Water balloons
