My advice to anyone who鈥檚 applying.
Ask any question you have! The college admissions process can be intimidating, and
it鈥檚 our job to help you every step of the way. Asking questions allows you to get
to know if a school is the right fit. Also don鈥檛 limit yourself while you look. Explore
different school sizes, programs and locations. You never know, a school you may not
have considered might be the perfect school for you. I also encourage you to ask the
same questions to each of the colleges you are interested in because each school will
answer questions differently. Lastly, take the pressure off of yourself while you
look. There are countless resources and people out there to help you along the way.
There is a college out there for you, I promise.
Why I work in admissions.
Being a first-generation student of an immigrant father and a rural mother, going
to college was uncharted territory for me. I had no clue what I was doing! I often
felt ashamed because all of my friends seemed to know what they were doing because
they had countless people in their life who had college going experience (turns out
they were just as confused as me). As you can imagine, going to college was a pivotal
moment in my life. I still remember the day my parents dropped me off and I thought
鈥渨ow I am really here.鈥 Going to college allowed me to experience so many life-changing
moments from studying abroad in Costa Rica to watching a meteor shower with my physics
class. All that led me to work in Admissions. I can鈥檛 tell you how many people were
so willing to answer my questions, walk me through processes, and share on- and off-campus
resources with me. It felt only right that I did the same for the students that came
after me.
What I love most about my job.
Nothing brings me more joy than helping students find their best fit on campus. Sharing
information about campus life and seeing students light up when they hear we have
a club for their favorite interest, a professor that does research on a topic they
love, or even that a student is just as obsessed with Chick-fil-A on campus as I am.
My absolute favorite thing about my job is being able to see students develop into
the people they have always wanted to be. Seeing them walk across the Commencement
stage with a degree they are proud of, and a lifetime of memories is a priceless feeling
I will never get over.
How my student experiences prepared me for this role.
In undergrad I was a tour guide, resident assistant, and orientation leader for several
years. It was my job to welcome students and families to campus and make them feel
at home. I never got tired of answering their questions about the school because it
was my favorite place to be, and I would tell anyone who would listen about it. While
working as a tour guide, I was able to work closely with the admission counselors
and learned that I could make a career out of helping students choose a college. I
took that information and ran with it and started working for the university two days
after I graduated.
